  • Day Eight – 144km – Eich to Karlsruhe

A last solo mission (for now)

I was up with the larks. Well, with the lorry drivers revving outside my room.

Mornings are the best. The temperature is perfect, the trails are empty, and after a few Kms the legs feel strong. Both the rising sun and sinking full moon greeted my arrival to the road, one on each shoulder.

I stopped at the supermarket early today, so as to allow me to choose the best lunch spot. I feel much better when there’s food in the bag.

So good it can stay upright so by itself

Tonight there’s a treat. Special guest star and super-domestique Steve-o is joining me, having gone to the significant effort of buying the kit, working out how best to intercept me, adapting plans when I started going further, and then driving down from Calais! We’ll be on the road together for the next five or six days. I’ll have to stop talking to the cows!

And even as I write this, waiting for Steve in the hotel bar, he’s arrived! As we greeted each other a wandering bagpiper heralded his arrival. “I’ve arranged that,” he said.
