  • Day 21 – 125km – Latisana to Nova Gorica

“Did you take the coast road back through your life?”

I could have cut scores of kilometers from today’s ride – it purposely wriggled around – but that would have meant missing out on a stunning coast road.

Grado sits on a lagoon, like Venice geographically but without the storied history.

    Grado

I popped over and then rode through wetlands and channels, canals and coastline. Sometimes in tarmac, often on gravel, and now and then through mud. All unmissably wild.

At Monfalcone, with a cruise ship peeping up from the harbour, I rode north to the border town of Goriza (Italian side) / Nova Gorica (Slovenian side). This was mainly off road and therefore sometimes very slow going. I had time on my side though, so no problem.

    Country number 7

Tomorrow I will take my first ride on the Trans Dinarica trail. Unlike the Eurovelo routes, which follow well trod cycle paths, or the via Postumia, which is flat, this trail is supposed to offer a good mix of off road with some elevation. The hills and mountains are up close to me now, so let’s see how it goes. Should take me a couple of days to get to Ljubljana.
