Day 23 – 68km – Postojna to Ljubljana

Lubbly jubbly

I started riding too early. Couldn’t help it, it’s now ingrained to be up and at ’em. But as usual Slovenia threw up beautiful vistas at every stage. Difficult to overstate the contrast of the emerald pastures and azure sky.

Typical!

I reached the lovely Ljubljana via a coffee stop and some forest bathing to slow my progress.

Slovenian custard slices are pleasingly large

Then it was to further tourist activities, taking in the old town along the river. It’s a glorious and uncrowded promenade through cafes, bars, unique shops and historical buildings.

A Kosovan guy stopped me to talk biking and offer recommendations. That’s what the bike does – makes you approachable in ways it would be impossible to be without it.

For lunch I had my first burek from what I later learnt is the insides undisputed king of Slovenian burek shops. I intend to rate my bureks – and bring you the results – so the rest have a lot to love up to.

The castle dominates the city skyline so I headed up for the incredible views it afforded. From the top you can make it the entire city and how it is framed by the Julien Alps.

As I exited I was accosted by two four year olds with a yellow hand written sign, shouting “Limonade! Limonade!” What had they seen in me to make me their mark? But then again who was I to argue? They dragged me to their even younger accomplice in the car park, behind a make-shift stall and fed me a cup of delicious home made iced lemonade for a Euro (yes I gave them a hefty tip). Brilliant.

Cheeky money makers and their delicious product

When I reached the river again I was surprised to find an international slalom kayak race going ahead in the middle of the city. Right next to a bar, with an empty riverside seat. Again, who was I to argue?
