Day 20 – 152km – Treviso to Latisana

Jewel of the Adriatic

Today was all about Venice. I’d decided to take a detour to see it, even if I wasn’t allowed to cycle through.

So the warm up was a 40km spin south to reach the floating city. It was good to see the ocean again, having turned away from it in the Netherlands on day 3.

Since bicycles aren’t allowed in the city my view was from the ferry, but it allowed me to see the Doge’s Palace, the entrance to the grand canal, and St Mark’s Campanile, along with countless Palazzos.

A second ferry took me from Lido over to the resumption of my ride, out of the lagoon along the long spit of land heading north east.

This post of the ride was just as rewarding, over miles of boardwalk and gravel.

I stopped for lunch in Caorle, one of those towns that was once a pretty fishing village and which has therefore attracted lots of holiday makers. In the heat of the afternoon I ground out long sections on relentlessly straight roads to my destination, logging my second longest ride of this trip.

Tomorrow I will traverse the coast once more before heading north at Monfalcone (possibly not seeing salt water again until the Bosphorus) and into Slovenia – country number seven.
